Overview of Membership in the Satir Learning Centre of Ottawa
Membership in the Satir Learning Centre of Ottawa (SLCO) presents opportunities for learning (at reduced rates) and leadership related to the Satir Method. The membership fee ranges between $20 and $40 per year, depending on the type of membership, and the membership term runs from July 1 to June 30.
As described more concisely below, you must have attended at least one weekend workshop or other equivalent Satir-related training to become a member of the SLCO.

Benefits of Membership
Each member in good standing with the SLCO
- shall be offered opportunities for training, workshops and seminars through the SLCO at a rate lower than that offered to the general public
- shall have voting rights at the Annual General Meeting and any Special Meeting(s) if he or she is at least 18 years old
Types of Memberships
Membership in the SLCO consists of the following categories:
- affilate members (the most common type of membership)
- leadership members
- clinical members
Affiliate Membership
Prerequisites for an Affiliate Membership
An affiliate member shall
- be interested in furthering the mission, vision, purpose and values of the SLCO
Conditions of an Affiliate Membership
Affiliate members shall not offer workshops, seminars, or training programs through the SLCO, nor shall they use their affiliate status in the SLCO to promote themselves.
Leadership Membership
Prerequisites for a Leadership Membership
A leadership member shall
- have completed a minimum of 120 hours of approved Satir training upon application
- complete 30 hours of relevant training every two years to retain his or her status
- be interested in taking on leadership roles in Satir education
- be interested in furthering the mission, vision, purpose and values of the SLCO
- agree to follow the SLCO's guidelines on ethical conduct and any other guidelines made pursuant to the SLCO's by-laws
- be interested in supporting the development and use of the Satir Model
Benefits of a Leadership Membership
Subject to the written approval of the Board, leadership members shall be eligible to lead workshops, seminars, and training programs for the public and for organizations in collaboration with a clinical member, under the auspices of the SLCO.
Leadership members shall provide their program proposals to the members of the Board for approval with sufficient time to allow the members of the Board to analyze the proposal and to provide a response prior to the proposed workshops, seminars, and / or training programs.
They shall include in their program proposals a demonstration of their ability and ongoing relevant professional development.
Clinical Membership
Prerequisites for a Clinical Membership
A clinical member shall
- have completed a minimum of 120 hours of approved Satir training upon application
- complete 60 hours of relevant continuing education every three years to retain his or her status
- have a graduate degree in psychology, counseling, social work, nursing, medicine or a related profession
- belong to a provincial or national professional organization or association approved by the Members of the Board of the SLCO
- be involved on a regular basis in the practice, direction, instruction or research in the field of therapy and counseling
- be interested in furthering the mission, vision, purpose, and values of the SLCO
- agree to follow the ethical code as published by their profession as well as the SLCO's guidelines on ethical conduct and any other guidelines made pursuant to the by-laws of the SLCO
- accept the Satir Model as one of his or her primary professional therapy models
Benefits and Conditions of a Clinical Membership
Subject to the written approval of the Board, clinical members shall be eligible to offer workshops, seminars, and training programs for counselors and therapists, for organizations, and for the public, under the auspices of the SLCO.
Clinical members shall provide their program proposals to the members of the Board for approval with sufficient time to allow the members of the Board to analyze the proposal and to provide a response prior to the proposed workshops, seminars, and / or training programs.
They shall include in their program proposals a demonstration of their ability and ongoing relevant professional development, and they shall provide evidence that they carry valid liability insurance.
Annual Membership Fee
The annual membership fee depends on the type of membership:
- affiliate: $20
- leadership: $40
- clinical: $40
